Looking to purchase a car in Mauritius for convenient transportation? Smart move! On our island, having your own vehicle means unparalleled freedom of movement. However, it’s worth noting that car prices in Mauritius can be on the higher side… Find out all you need to know below.

Where to purchase a car in Mauritius

For those considering a move to Mauritius, buying a car can offer more flexibility and cost-effectiveness than long-term renting. If you’re leaning towards investing in a vehicle, it’s wise to explore the diverse options available on the island, whether you’re eyeing a brand-new ride or considering a pre-owned one.

Purchasing from a dealership or agency

Dealerships abound in Mauritius, making it convenient to find your ideal vehicle. When buying from a dealership, they handle the entire process, simplifying the transaction for you. Here are some key points to consider: – Visit multiple automotive agencies and dealerships to compare options before making a decision. You’ll find a wide range of brands available, from Peugeot and Renault to BMW, Porsche, Honda, Toyota, and more. – Prepare the necessary documents, including your Residence Permit/Visa, ID card, proof of address, and passport. – Dealerships typically handle all aspects of the purchase process, including paperwork and servicing arrangements. New cars often come with complimentary servicing for a certain period. – Consult with your bank to explore payment options. Leasing (hire-purchase) is common for new or nearly-new cars, with dealerships facilitating the financing process. – Budget-wise, expect to allocate around Rs 1,000,000 (€10,000) or more for an entry-level new car and approximately Rs 300,000 (€6,000) on average for a second-hand vehicle in good condition. Purchasing a Vehicle from a Private Seller

If you’re considering buying a used vehicle, you’ll be dealing directly with a private seller. Here’s how to find the right second-hand car:

  • Regularly check websites like L’ExpressCars.mu or MyCar.mu, or join Facebook groups to browse cars for sale on the island.
  • Bring yourResidence Permit, proof of address, and passport when purchasing the car.
  • Consider having a professional mechanic help you evaluate the vehicle if you’re not familiar with cars. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
  • Ensure you obtain a Technical Inspection Certificate, a Non-Gage Certificate, and a Sales Certificate, which you’ll need to fill out in 2/3 copies. Once you have the documents, head to the Registrar Building in Port-Louis to pay the registration fees for the purchased vehicle.
  • Next, visit the National Transport Authority (NTA) to obtain your vehicle registration card and renew the road tax.
  • Arrange vehicle insurance. Shop around to explore different options available. You’ll need to present the original Sales Certificate + receipt, your ID card, proof of address, and your driver’s license.

Import your car in Mauritius

Bringing your car to the island can be an option if you’re relocating, but it’s not always the best choice due to costs and constraints. This option can be expensive because:

  • Ensuring that the vehicle’s steering wheel is on the right side (passenger side on the left) may require modification.
  • Approval from the NTA may necessitate modifications to your vehicle.
  • Transportation and customs clearance fees are to be expected, totaling around €3,000 to €4,000 + a 15% tax on the Cost Insurance Freight + 15% VAT on the car.

Note: These fees can amount to double the price of your vehicle at the time of purchase!
