Organizing your relocation to Mauritius
Importing your furniture
Before relocating to Mauritius, it’s crucial to determine where you’ll be sending your furniture! While it may seem like a straightforward question, it’s essential for your moving process.
To ship your belongings via container with a moving company, ensure you have:
- A valid passport.
- A delivery address in Mauritius.
- Your residence permit (visa) or “approval in principle” (pre-approval for the occupational permit process in Mauritius), if applicable.
Sorting through your belongings
Before you start your relocation process, you’ll need to pack your belongings. It’s certainly not the most enjoyable phase of moving… You’ll have to sort through your things and probably leave some furniture and items behind.
If you plan to bring all your belongings, you’ll need to consider customs restrictions. You are allowed to import your personal effects, which may include appliances, furniture, clothing, dishes, and your car.
However, there is a list of strictly prohibited items or items requiring special authorization.

Type of transportation and literage
Once you have sorted through your belongings, the moving company will take inventory and assess the volume to be transported. This assessment is crucial for determining the most suitable transportation method, including:
- The use of pallets per cubic meter.
- The number, type, and dimensions of containers required.
- The number and dimensions of crates and storage boxes.
Options for transportation
Air Transport: Ideal if you’re traveling light, as it’s much quicker. The drawback? It’s pricier!
Sea Freight: Offers ample space for all your belongings and various options depending on the volume you’re moving. Plus, it ensures better protection for your items. You’ll save on packing, handling, and storage. Typically, the waiting time ranges from 20 to 40 days.
Choosing the Right Container
Containers come in various sizes, depending on your needs. Here are some options:

If you have a limited number of belongings, consider choosing “groupage.” This option involves shipping your items in the same container as those of other expats, which can significantly reduce transportation costs.
Typically ranging from €2,000 to €5,000 (€350 per m³), this service offers savings but may entail waiting until the container is fully filled, potentially delaying the delivery time.
Ask for quotes
Moving is a significant investment and decision that should not be taken lightly! After assessing the volume of your belongings and determining your needs, it will be easier to find what suits you.
We recommend requesting quotes from several moving companies to compare offers more effectively.
Here is a list of information you will need:
- Services and provisions at departure and arrival
- Type of transportation (air or sea)
- Duration of transportation
- Moving procedures with authorities and required documents
- Cost of the transporter and waiting time on site
- Insurance coverage
Before finalizing your arrangements to move to Mauritius and accepting the quote, you also need to establish a list of all your belongings to make a “declaration of value.” This allows you to claim compensation from your mover/transporter in case of unforeseen damage. An insurance contract will also be provided.
Note: It is essential for you to establish a moving contract with the company you have chosen. Do not hesitate to request one! This contract includes your transporter’s obligations and your insurance coverage.
Customs Clearance and Arrival of Your Furniture in Mauritius
Once the container arrives at its destination, you will need to go to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) to complete your customs formalities. You must have your residence or stay permit, your passport, the list of your belongings, and the declaration of value on hand.
Warning: in the absence of any of these documents, your container will remain blocked in customs. You will then have to pay additional storage fees.
The customs officers will then offer you an appointment at the port for the container’s opening. The customs inspection will then verify the contents.
Another warning: you may face heavy penalties if they find prohibited products, or even imprisonment in some cases (see the list above). There are usually no taxes to pay on personal effects such as clothes, TVs, furniture, appliances, and others already in use for at least 1 year. However, if they find new products, you will need to pay to clear them through customs.
Tip: Remember to take your new products out of their boxes. Feel free to inquire with your mover/transporter to avoid surprises!
