You are in Mauritius under a Retiree Visa, can you tell us more about that ?
I’ve got a retired visa here in Mauritius and I’ve been living it up for over three years now with my residence permit. Being on this island just makes me happy! After a month chilling in France, coming back home to Mauritius feels like a big sigh of relief.
This is where I belong now.
Why did you choose Mauritius ?
I’ve been familiar with Mauritius for quite some time now—30 years, to be exact. I was drawn to a place where the weather stays warm almost year-round, and Mauritius fits the bill perfectly. Even during the winters, it’s not too chilly here. Plus, the French-speaking vibe adds a lovely touch. Honestly, everything about this place is spot on!
How did your preparation go (moving, visa), and how did you gather your information ?
I did some research online and joined an expat forum called “Expat à l’île Maurice” to get some advice and accurate information. Anaïs from SmartTraveller offered to help, saying, “I can take care of you and answer all your questions!” So, I took her up on the offer and asked away.
It was amazing; she handled everything. From sorting out my residence permit to finding a place to live, and even small stuff like setting up medical appointments in Mauritius to get everything sorted.
Overall, it was a really smooth experience. I landed here feeling totally at ease!
How is retirement in Mauritius ? What do you do during the day ?
After spending over 40 years rushing against the clock, retirement has ushered in a whole new mindset for me: “If it’s not done today, there’s always tomorrow.”
Every morning, I kickstart my day with a leisurely two-hour walk with my dogs, whether it’s strolling through sugarcane fields, along the beach, or into the forest. Upon my return, I run a few errands and often treat myself to a cup of coffee at the local bakery.
In the afternoons, I relish a brief siesta, lose myself in a good book for relaxation, take a dip in the sea, and indulge in various water sports like paddleboarding or canoeing. Life’s just a breeze here!
Occasionally, I’ll rent a catamaran with friends for an adventure. And when family or friends come to visit, we embark on island explorations, discovering gems like Bois Chéri or Le Morne. There’s never a shortage of things to do!
Don’t you feel lonely ?
Not at all! My social life here is incredibly enjoyable! I’ve been warmly welcomed by my landlords, who have introduced me to many Mauritians.
I have the luxury of having a cook and a housekeeper, which makes hosting a breeze for me. And it’s always a pleasure. I also frequently go out with friends! We often go to the theater, catch shows at Caudan, and visit exhibitions. There are some really fascinating exhibitions. There’s never a dull moment in Mauritius.
What do you enjoy the most about your retirement in Mauritius ?
I’d say what I love most is the climate! The weather and the environment, including the wildlife, the birds chirping, the flowers, the lush vegetation, and the beaches. And of course, the smiles of the Mauritians, though I think that’s also influenced by the climate.
Do you like your new house? (Luc is lucky to live in front of the ocean)
Having breakfast with a view of the sea… It’s absolutely wonderful! I genuinely love this lifestyle! I settled into it pretty fast. My life has taken a turn for the better, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
Especially when you consider the social climate in France right now, it’s not exactly inviting. We’re definitely better off here!
How would you sum up your 3 years of retirement in Mauritius?
When it comes to summarizing, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive. Mauritius is a truly delightful island, with hardly any downsides!
However, there are three minor areas that could use improvement:
There’s an ecological challenge that needs serious attention. Traffic congestion is a bit of a hassle, sometimes even posing risks. And, of course, there’s the issue of stray dogs.
But aside from these points, which I believe can be addressed with time, everything else is simply perfect. It’s a haven filled with warm, welcoming smiles from the Mauritian people.
Do you have any advice to offer to retirees who would like to live in Mauritius?
